Piano & Guitar
Piano & Guitar
I have a BA (Hons) in Popular Music from Edinburgh Napier University and I love to teach and perform music. I am currently teaching privately alongside working with music schools around Edinburgh City Centre, in the Glasgow area, in Haddington and I have also spent 2 summers tutoring in the United States. I understand that no two students are the same but that passion, determination, enjoyment and achievement are mutual goals for all.
From beginner to advanced and children to adults, all are welcome. I have helped many of my students with their graded exams and SQA requirements and for other we have learned their favourite songs. The lessons are always focused around the students needs and aspirations. It is vital that learning music is fun, creating and reward never ardous or mundane.
I perform with various bands whether its function band work, playing Jazz and Rock & Pop for weddings and private events, or playing original material. I have also spent months writing, producing, directing and performing a show that I took to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. In 2016 with Luke Closely & Listen, and in 2017 Luke Closely: Mugician. In these shows I have attempted to combine music and magic with theatre and comedy. I believe that using this live practical experience can bring useful insights into the classroom lessons.

PIANO: Trinity/ABRSM Classical grades, Jazz, Rock & Pop, Keyboard Skills, Improvisations, Ear Training and Practical Music Theory.
GUITAR: Jazz, Rock & Pop, Improvisations, Ear Training, Practical Music Theory, Note reading on Guitar, Acoustic & Electric Guitar Styles.
MY SPECIALITY: Jazz and Popular Music. Through these styles you learn and understand chords and practical music theory (the stuff that will help you jam and develop your musicality). This practice heavily encourages creativity, improvisation, and composition. None of this is possible however without a solid grouding in the fundementals of music that you must learn no matter what path you decide to follow.
GUITARIST | PIANIST | PERFORMER | TEACHER
Multi-instrumentalist Luke Cunningham was born and raised in Scotland. He left high school with determination to pursue the arts. This led him to study a one year HNC in Music Business before accepting a position at Edinburgh Napier to study BA (Hons) Popular Music. Luke enrolled as a guitarist but his skills as a keyboard/piano player are equal. From the start, he had a keen eye on developing as a Jazz musician and this is where his career as a self-employed arts professional began to take shape.
Jazz and Blues music is where Luke is at home, drawing influence from Jazz greats such as Wynton Kelly, Hank Jones, Wes Montgomery, George Benson, Herbie Hancock, Cannonball Adderley, and Miles Davis among others. Contemporary influences include Madeline Peyroux, Gregory Porter, Cory Henry, John Scofield and Jacky Terrason. Luke uses a custom semi-hollow bodied fender telecaster and a fender valve amp to create warm, authentic Jazz guitar tones as well as crunch driven, fusion sounds. And although Luke has learned traditional roots Jazz piano from listening to his idols he adores his Nord keyboard, making the most out of the Hammond, Rhodes and piano sounds. He is currently developing material with his own Jazz group and a Funk/Neo-Soul group aiming to find function work, sessions and pursuit original content written in a modern style.
To date Luke has played in various bands as both a keyboard/piano player and a guitarist, performing in various venues across Glasgow and Edinburgh from the SECC Clyde auditorium, the 02 ABC, The Garage, Voodoo Rooms, Electric Circus to local pubs in Edinburgh such as Fiddlers Arm and Finnegan's Wake. He has also performed a 20-minute set in Chicago at Uptown Underground and been invited to perform at Upper West Side Lounge in New York.
At present Luke has a busy week as a private music tutor, working for himself and with other organisations such as Most Entertaining, Rock & Pop School Scotland, Lamp House Music and All About Music Education. He is also continually writing and developing material for another show to be performed as a part of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2017. His busy 2016 Fringe show Luke Closely & Listen merited a position in the notorious Voodoo Rooms – Ballroom, alongside celebrated acts such as Anna Morris (BBC’s Outnumbered, ITV’s Bridesmaids), and Laura London (Penn & Teller’ Fool Us, BBC’s Next Great Magician). Luke has studied theatre, musicians, comedians, magicians and storytellers to draw together his own unique one-man variety show, a combination of music and magic blended together with narrative and comedy.
